In late 2014 I was approached for a poster design for local Saint Louis musician Beth Bombara. The poster design led to a conversation with the band about pursuing an animated music video. This video was the first music video collaboration between my brother Preston Gibson & myself. We had worked together previously on other animation projects but never anything to this scale before.
We kept the process organic and fluid and over the course of 9 months created this video which included custom 3D character design and rigging as well as frame by frame painting in photoshop for additional styling purposes.
Shortly after completing the Beth Bombara video Run the Jewels released their second album. As opportunity seekers we (Bug & Sluzzy) formed a small team, reached out to the music duo to create an animated music video together. To our surprise they were open to the work and were looking to create a lyric video for their song “Early” which featured Boots.
Sourcing inspiration from movies, news media as well as existing typography styling from the bands logo we decided to pursue a gritty street-edge style that tailored cinematic look and feel with the rawness that RTJ delivers in their beats and lyrics.
